THE GENUS ABS LONG LIFE COW OF 2015 IS ANNOUNCED
Lliwe Rosette 25, owned by B & V Davidson from Gretna, Scotland was announced as the winner of the 2015 Genus ABS Long Life Cow Competition at the UK Dairy Day on Wednesday 16th September.
“The Long Life Cow Competition was created to celebrate cows that have made an outstanding lifetime contribution,” comments Genus ABS Cornerstone Manager, Hannah Noble. “There are many attributes which contribute to a cow lasting longer. She will suit the management system, get in calf regularly over several lactations and be a high producer with good compositional and hygienic milk quality. Most importantly she will be profitable.”
“To a farmer, a Long Life Cow has many meanings and therefore the entry criteria were deliberately left open, allowing entrants the opportunity to describe what they believed made their cow a worthy competitor,” continues Hannah.
Genus ABS was thrilled when Mary Mead the renowned co-founder of Yeo Valley Family Farm agreed to judge the competition. Mrs Mead is widely regarded as a pioneer of sustainable farming and continues to oversee the 1,400 acre Yeo Valley organic farm in Somerset.
Lliwe Rosette 25 EX95 (8E) was born in November 1998 and as she approaches her 18th birthday she is still going strong. Rosette is now into her 11th lactation and with a lifetime milk yield of 152,196kg – equating to an impressive average yield of 13,836kgs, she continues to impress. With her outstanding conformation and exceptionally low cell count – averaging just 76 over her productive life, Rosette remains a firm favourite with the Davidson family.
Speaking about the award, Craig Davidson of B & V Davidson said, “Rosette can only be described in one word – awesome! She has produced over 152 tonnes of milk over her lifetime this far and has consistently got back in calf despite having had two sets of twins and a period of embryo transfer. I wish I could clone her as I will never milk a more profitable Long Life Cow!”
Lliwe Rosette 25 competed against three excellent country finalists to be crowned the overall UK winner:
- England – Amber Lovely Lily EX90 28, a 15th lactation cow with a lifetime yield of 110 tonnes, owned by J Hole & Sons from Ashover, Derbyshire.
- Wales – Blackisle Pauline, owned by R Pilkington, Wrexham. Pauline is a 7th lactation British Friesian cow who has amassed a lifetime yield of over 92 tonnes so far!
- Northern Ireland – Ballydrum Celsius Betty, a 14th lactation cow with a lifetime yield of over 138 tonnes, owned by R. Woolsey from Toomebridge, Co. Antrim.
Each of the finalists received a glass trophy and a certificate and Lliwe Rosette 25 was presented with the coveted Long Life Cow Trophy.
“The quality of entries we received this year really highlights the durability of UK cows and the excellence of UK stockmanship,” Hannah continues. “I think the competition clearly demonstrates that the modern dairy cow is capable of delivering outstanding production whilst maintaining good levels of reproduction and withstanding the threat of disease.”
